Cardiff fire Chief Gil Zonge "answered his final alarm" on Saturday, May 11, the volunteer company in Egg Harbor Township said in a Facebook post. His age and cause of death were not given.

Zonge was a member of the Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company and the Egg Harbor Township Fire Department for more than 30 years.

"He also served the Atlantic County Fire Community as an instructor at the Atlantic County Fire Academy teaching many of our current county firefighters," the Cardiff fire company said. "He led a life of selfless volunteer community service. Chief Zonge’s contributions to the fire service and community will remain everlasting.

"Rest in peace Chief, your duty and service has concluded."

Fellow firefighters mourned Zonge's death.

"Chief, your presence will be deeply missed by so many," the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company replied on Facebook. "Thank you for your invaluable contributions to our community and the profound impact you've had on countless firefighters through your dedicated teaching over the years."

"Our condolences to you all and his family," the Atlantic City firefighters union commented. "Chief Zonge's contributions to the fire service will be felt for generations to come."

The Cardiff fire company also said Zonge's funeral service information "will be posted in the future."
